O.K.D.E. statement on the developments in Syria

The circumstances surrounding the overthrow of Assad’s reactionary, dictatorial regime in Syria sadly leave no room for illusions about a better future for the suffering peoples of the Middle East. The imperialist powers of the US, NATO, and the EU now celebrate the obscurantist coalition of Joulani’s Islamists as “liberators”—the very same groups they had labeled “terrorists” until recently, and whose existence, in any case, they almost entirely engineered. The future they envision for the Syrian people holds no promise of democracy or freedom, but rather a harsh, oppressive regime in a war-torn and devastated country. This is a country they will not rush to rebuild or support without extracting significant concessions.
On the contrary, their goal is to use this new “prize” (to whatever extent they can securely hold it) to intensify their aggression toward Iran and their major rivals, China and Russia. Both have a significant presence in the Middle East—militarily for Russia, and economically for China, especially in relation to trade routes such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the land corridor connecting Russia to India, among others. This colossal confrontation is about global dominance, or even the survival of the “old” imperialist powers (the US and EU) against their “emerging” competitors.
The role and actions of the Zionist state of Israel come as no surprise: bombings on Syrian territory, plans for the rapid expansion of settlements in the Golan Heights (which it has illegally occupied since the 1967 war), and more. However, what is most alarming is the prospect of the war spreading toward Iran—potentially in the near future.
These objectives—such as “regime change” in Syria, containing and striking Iran, and others—have long been central to the American imperialist agenda for the “Greater Middle East,” a plan recently revived through the Abraham Accords.
The position of the Kurds in Syria is particularly precarious, as their leadership has, unfortunately, tied the legitimate demand for a Kurdish state to an alliance with the US and Israel. This is especially troubling if they are used as a launchpad for attacks against Iran.
Among the many reactionary local and regional “players” (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc.), not to mention the Zionists in Israel, who are intervening on Syrian soil, it is almost inconceivable that any balance will be struck or any stability established. Syria is at risk of becoming another divided and destroyed country, like Libya, with partition increasingly likely. These developments, of course, further devastate the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, who continue to suffer from the attacks and genocide perpetrated by the Zionists.
It is also important to highlight Turkey’s role, which underscores both its growing influence as a “sub-imperial” power and a major regional force, as well as the threats such regimes pose to the people of the region.
Among the most troubling actors, however, is the Mitsotakis government. Positioned as the most “reliable” and “willing” ally of the imperialist bloc (comprising the US, NATO, EU, and Zionists), it not only supports the so-called “liberation” of Syria but also seeks to pave the way for Greek military participation in a potential “peacekeeping force” in the region. Coupled with excessive military spending, the hosting of strategic US-NATO bases in Alexandroupolis, Souda, and elsewhere, the deployment of frigates in the Red Sea, and alignment with the semi-authoritarian Zelensky regime in Kyiv, this militaristic adventurism risks entangling the Greek people in a sprawling conflict with unpredictable and potentially catastrophic consequences.
The threat of a broader war—potentially escalating into a declared or undeclared Third World War—grows more imminent with each passing day. The imperialist bloc to which “our own” rulers belong (US-NATO-EU) relentlessly drives us toward catastrophe. This is starkly reflected in the bloodthirsty rhetoric of NATO’s new Secretary General, Mark Rutte, who has called for a “war economy” and sacrifices in social spending. The danger intensifies daily.
It is imperative for the people, especially the youth and workers’ movements, to take a decisive stand against this march toward destruction. A mass, determined, and enduring anti-war, anti-imperialist movement must be built to resist. To halt all participation and collaboration in the crimes of Western imperialists (US-NATO-EU). To oppose exorbitant military expenditures and the economic devastation they bring, standing against the establishment of war-driven bases, and fighting to protect democratic freedoms and social rights from being crushed under the pretext of “emergency,” “national threats,” and war.
